Personal Support Worker | New Brunswick.

While the support worker industry’s unofficial capital is in Ontario, the growth of the health care specialist industry in the province of New Brunswick is accelerating at too rapid a pace to ignore.

Brief overview

The PSW Industry in New Brunswick is not set up like it is in Ontario. Very few true support worker courses exist and most employers only require CPR and first-aid. The term PSW covers home support worker, home health care workers, PCA (personal care attendant) etc. Without some of the more higher standards that exist in other provinces (notably Ontario) wages for support workers in New Brunswick are amongst the lowest in the country.

Courses & Careers

Courses typically last anywhere from eight months to one year, depending on whether you register in the ‘accelerated’ course. Upon completion of a program, most career colleges in New Brunswick (and Canada for that matter) will require students to pas a test administered by the
National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) . Don't worry, most find this test dead easy if they've been paying attention in class and during co-op.

After graduation employment can be found using the usual sources, such as the
Canadian Job Bank, PSWJobs.com, local newspapers, job boards and even your alumni services board at your school.

As we’ve alluded to above, the loose regulations within the province has created a lower wage level vs Ontario and other provinces. Most PSW jobs in New Brunswick pay within the $9 - $12 range. Of course opportunities exist at higher wage levels (especially in hospital settings). Otherwise the industry in NB is very similar to that of Ontario and the rest of Canada. A quick google for the term ‘personal support worker’ should point you in the right direction. As for now here are some additional links & resources.
